In each photograph, even those that seem empty or lonely, two glances resonate, the one of the photographer and the one of the viewer. This is what happens in "Shukran", Davide Perbellini's photographic project, where as viewers we are invited to set off and travel on the streets of Marrakech. We get into a car at night and go out only at the last shoot and then back into the car conversing with the guide who carries us around the city. It almost seems to be trapped in a virtuous circle of shoots that freeze architecture, people and life in a gaze, with that typical ephemeral savour of analog photography. Intuition suggests us a hectic life, but we mainly see glimpses of peacefulness, frozen in a soft light and in barely hinted shadows. Sceneries of the city, scooters, a mule, lowered shutters, a pharmacy are interspersed with wide gazes on squares and streets.
A glance enclosed in the single word "Shukran", which like a mantra seems to animate every frame, a perfect synthesis of an entire population and an approach to life. Many of the people who show up, including the photographer himself, look us directly in the eyes. They are right there in front of us, not allowing to avoid their gaze and give us access to that moment, to something so intimate and inexplicable such as their own world.
